FREEWHEELERS is a world premiere by A Broken Umbrella Theatre. FREEWHEELERS explores an uncanny historical collision in New Haven’s history: in 1866, the bicycle was patented in New Haven. That same year, the country's first corset factory opened just blocks away from the town’s famed Green. These parallel events set into motion a new chapter in women's ongoing fight for equality. Following the lives of Elizabeth, an upper class woman, Anne, a lower class immigrant and Amelia, a child laborer, the show is a spectacle of song, dance, and storytelling that explores the convergence of the corset and the bicycle—and the exhilarating effect that these coinciding historical events had on society and women’s rights.
